Abstract: |
Argues that the town developed from an early AS royal estate centre which was based on an Iron Age enclosure later refurbished as a defence against the Danes. A late 7th/early 8th century minster is postulated within the earthwork. A monastery was founded or re-endowed by Wulfrun (AD 994). A market is documented from c 1180 and the borough from 1263. There was a manorial division between the church's Deanery Manor and the royal manor of Stowheath. F B |
