Abstract: |
Presents results of a detailed survey of the main areas of historic settlement, ie the last 300 years until evacuation in 1930. The island is now included in the World Heritage List and is owned by National Trust for Scotland. Earlier structures remain to be examined. The old black houses were partly replaced by more sanitary dwellings in the 1830s and further rebuilding took place in the 1860s. Field surveys show the village, the estate and communal buildings, the cleitean (dry stone buildings used for a variety of storage purposes), field walls, and the structures in Gleann Mor. Descriptions are generalized. |
