Abstract: |
Hatfield Forest is a unique survival, in full working order, of all the elements of a medieval forest: deer, cattle, coppice woods, pollards, scrub, timber trees, grassland, and fen. It also has a rabbit warren and a 17th century lodge. Its human and natural history is described and discussed in all aspects, including medieval law and management, and the earthworks and buildings of the Forest. A management philosophy for its next 900 years is set out. (For review, see Thomas Hinde in Times Lit Suppl, 31 Mar 1989, 348.) |
