Abstract: |
Part 1 contains reprints of Philip Corder's classic papers 'The Roman pottery at Crambeck, Castle Howard' (1928) and 'A pair of 4th-century Romano-British pottery kilns near Crambeck' (1937), together with four short notes by other authors from 1965-6. Part 2 consists of two papers under the heading The Crambeck Roman pottery industry - recent research: Jeremy Evans (43-90) in 'Crambeck: the development of a major northern pottery industry' provides a chemical 'fingerprint' of the main fabric types from Crambeck and quantifies the production of the kilns; a change in distribution patterns in later 4th century looks like administrative - military? - requirements. John Hinchliffe & Alister Bartlett (91-5) conducted 'A survey of the Roman pottery production site at Jamie's Craggs, Crambeck', using geophysical and fieldwalking methods and noting cultivation damage to buried features. Part 3 contains reprints of reports on The Crambe Romano-British site, by Leslie P Wenham (1966), and by E M King & M Moore (1974) on further pottery kilns and a drying kiln. |
