Abstract: |
The 1988 Jarrow Lecture pursues the theme of the evidence which Bede and Eddius Stephanus provide about the sites (and, obliquely, about the social, economic, and administrative arrangements they embodied) of the Celtic peoples in N Britain. It is argued that some of these sites underlie those of known Anglian date, and identifications are offered within the three classes of royal site mentioned by the two writers. The civitates are Alt Clut (Dumbarton) and Bamburgh; urbes, Kirk Hill St Abb's, Dunbar, and Doon Hill; the villa regalis is argued as the Edwin-Paulinus phase of Yeavering, where the buildings appropriate to a royal estate centre are found. |
