Abstract:
An attempt to clear the way for a new approach argues that there were radical (not necessarily violent) changes affecting Celtic society in Britain and Ireland from 2nd century AD onwards, with the emergence of new leaders and centres of power. The Roman world acted as catalyst even in the remoter regions not actually governed by Rome; and it is argued that this Roman influence continued even after the collapse of Roman control, was reinforced by the coming of Christianity, and even affected Celtic art. Chapters treat Early Christian Celts; recent developments in Celtic studies; the Romanized zone of Britannia and the non-Romanized zone; the origin of the Picts; Ireland; the Celts abroad; and Celtic art in two phases, before c 400 and from c 400 to 700.
