Abstract: |
It is not feasible to retain all pieces of structural wood retrieved in wetland excavations, but careful assessment is needed to determine which pieces are merely recorded and which retained for future study. These guidelines discuss the pre-excavation planning, documentation for retrieval, excavation, the role of the wood specialist, the context records, maintenance of wet wood, its removal and storage, and details of the records needed. Sampling, sample selection and retention, conservation, curation and display are all considered and a flow diagram provided. Revisions of this document will be issued as needed. |
