Abstract:
Excavations were carried out at 2 Parchment Street in advance of a new development. The aim was to fully excavate a medieval building which had been noted in earlier test-pits. Saxon pottery and a wattle fence were discovered under what may have been the original Saxon street frontage. At least two phases of medieval building were recorded, the first being the construction of a large, shallow-cellared room with substantial foundations. The room had two finely constructed entrance ways, one facing onto the frontage, the other, on the south side, complete with steps possibly leading to another level. In the 14th century, the building was extended by at least three rooms and a latrine pit. The pit contained lots of good environmental and archaeological evidence. Later phases of minor stuctural alterations continued until at least the 16th century, and in the 17th-18th century the original room was replaced by another substantial building. In the mid 19th century, the buildings were demolished and a Masons' Hall was constructed. [Au(adp)]
