Abstract: |
Whitwood Wharf was constructed in the second half of the 19th century and stood on the southern bank of the river Calder slightly east of the entrance to the Aire and Calder navigation at Fairies Hill Lock. In response to an application to construct a concrete plant and aggregates wharf a brief photographic and visual assessment of the dock was carried out followed by a watching brief. Only two of the extant structures, a footbridge over the stream north-west of the dock and part of the western dock entrance, appeared to be survivals from the original later 19th century dock. Both structures were of coursed sandstone ashlar, the footbridge was in poor condition and showed signs of structural failure, the dock was obscured by vegetation and it was not possible to determine the extent of survival of the feature. The watching brief identified the stonework of the former dock and stone revetting along the western bank. The western side of the development area was devoid of archaeological features as much of this area had been previously disturbed. The site played a role as a transit point for coal extracted from the nearby collieries from the early 19th century. In the course of the life of the dock many alterations were made to its form and structures. The extant walls of the wharf pool were of concrete, integrated with a cast concrete railway bridge first attested in an OS map of 1955 and associated with a mineral railway servicing the site. The original structure of the eastern bank at the entrance to the dock had been replaced with a modern wall of steel shuttering. There was no trace of a structure or platform relating to a footbridge that the maps showed crossing the entrance to the dock. All of the railway infrastructure, cranes and loading platforms marked on the historic maps on the eastern side of the site had been removed and the site had been extensively landscaped. Nothing survived of any of this 19th century infrastructure. [Au(abr)] |
