Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the seeking of planning permission for the demolition of the existing building, and the construction of 13 residential apartments. The site lay within an area of Reading that was developed during the medieval period. This was reflected in the number of medieval entries in the SMR of sites in close proximity to the proposal site. While many of these entries related to the development of the waterfront in the town, other finds and features discovered during archaeological investigations in the area attested to the medieval history of Reading. The survival of any archaeological deposits on the site was conditional on the extent of later truncation. It was evident that the proposal site had a long history of use, particularly during the 19th century. It was suggested that the existing buildings on the site contained basements, and these would have undoubtedly removed, at least in part, any archaeological deposits in their immediate area. The development of the proposal site during the 19th century indicated that the whole of the site had at some stage been covered by buildings. However, the scale and extent of truncation could not easily be assessed without field observation. Historical evidence suggested that the street level in the vicinity of the proposal site was significantly lowered during the 19th century, however, this would not have affected the western areas of the proposal site, and considering the date of the current buildings, was unlikely to have affected any land beyond the current line of the footpath. The report determined that the proposal site had the potential to contain subsurface archaeological deposits, in particular evidence of medieval and early post-medieval Reading. [Au(adp)] |
