Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a house and garage within Bletchingly identified that the town may have developed from a small rural Saxon settlement to a more planned and prosperous market village with a castle in the early 13th century. It had declined somewhat from the 14th century onwards. The proposal site itself had lain beyond the developed area of the mid-18th century, and had therefore almost certainly lain beyond the settled area of medieval Bletchingly. Only one pre-medieval find, a Late Bronze Age socketed axe, had been recorded in the area. It was recommended that no further archaeological work would be necessary. [Au(adp)] |
