Abstract: |
Two trial trenches were excavated in advance of the development of the site. The evaluation suggested that the site underwent a substantial degree of disturbance in the late 19th/early 20th century which resulted in the deposition or accumulation of c.0.70m of made ground. The date of the material tied in with the cartographic evidence, which indicated that the site was developed at some point between c.1914 and 1934. The deeper deposits of brown loamy soil appeared similar to those identified during the archaeological investigation of another site to the rear of Angel Court. The brown loam layer deposit noted in SMR 2758 contained medieval pottery and tile fragments, which were absent from this layer on the present site, nor were any features cut into the layer identified on this occasion. A potential palaeochannel identified in trial trench 1 was at a depth of 1.8m. This exceeded the depth to which the developers proposed to disturb, c.1.5m, and it would be possible to preserve this feature in situ. It was therefore recommended that no further archaeological work was required in connection with this feature or the rest of the site. [Au(adp)] |
