Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment identified that activity on the site before the medieval period was possible but not likely. After the 12th century there was the potential for remains on the northern side of the site, but a possible clay extraction pit may have caused some disturbance. The centre of the application site probably contained the crofts of four medieval properties. One croft boundary ditch was visible at ground level, and a ditch, which may have marked the rear of the crofts, was just visible on air photographs. The southern edge of the site contained the distinct earthwork of a hollow-way, probably of 12th century date. There were no signs of late medieval ridge and furrow, but the croft areas may have masked earlier ploughing features. [Au(adp)] |
