Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during groundworks associated with the construction of an extension. A number of artefacts were recovered, including post-medieval pottery, a worked flint and a quantity of spectacle lenses and other opticians' waste. No archaeological features considered to pre-date the 19th century were observed, although one feature, possibly a pit, could not be dated. A brick structure may have been a remnant of a previous building recorded on a map of 1840, or possibly a soakaway associated with it. Research identified that the property had been occupied by an optician from at least 1954 to 1975. [AIP] |
