Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the groundworks associated with the extension of the existing property to the rear. The lowering of the rear garden revealed an occupation deposit of brown loam with fragments of oyster shell, tile etc. A dump of oyster shell was visible in the topsoil in the north-west corner of the garden. A well lined with yellow bricks was found along the northern wall line of the proposed extension. The excavation of footing trenches revealed an east-west wall line running from the rear of the property to the existing building. The line of this wall was not present on the 1886 Ordnance Survey Map or the Warren Map of Bury St Edmunds (1747) which suggested that the wall line respected a boundary disused by the mid 18th century and was therefore probably medieval. No finds were recovered to support such a date. [Au(adp)] |
