Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for a new vicarage, church meeting room and houses identified that a significant amount of archaeological material had been found in the general surrounding area, although almost all finds were from geological deposits other than the London Clay which underlay the proposal site. Many of the finds were of flint artefacts dating from the Mesolithic to Bronze Age periods, although Palaeolithic material had also been found. Some of the material was concentrated in such a way as to suggest settlement sites. A long barrow which had been built in the Neolithic but appeared to have also been used in the Bronze Age and the Iron Age lay to the south of the proposal site. Iron Age and Roman occupation sites and post-medieval corn-drying kilns had been recorded in the area, and a moated medieval site lay to the west. It was concluded that the proposal area had a significant archaeological potential due to its proximity to a variety of prehistoric sites, but that this potential had been reduced by the fact that it lay on London Clay. Trial trenching was recommended. [AIP] |
