Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out at St Paternus' Church during groundwork for upgrading the electricity supply and installation of water and drainage services, and in the course of repairs to the fabric of the building. Buried remains encountered during trenching work in the churchyard included a substantial ditch and revetted bank on the line of the former churchyard boundary. Parts of four articulated human skeletons and a large quantity of disarticulated human bone were recovered for re-burial during a special service. The major find of the project was a medieval gable cross, carved from polyphant stone. Other finds included fragments of medieval pottery, roofing tile and slate. Recording of repairs to the building fabric was limited but it was observed that there were probably two constructional phases to the 15th century south aisle, not one as suggested by Pevsner, the aisle having been extended and the south wall rebuilt. Inside the church interior a putlog hole for the roof loft was revealed by removal of a memorial plaque from the south aisle wall. [Au(abr)]
