Abstract: |
In March 1995 a watching brief was maintained over the removal of old portaloos and the installation of new ones at St. Mawes Castle. The fieldwork involved examining the sockets of posts removed to allow access for a crane, monitoring groundwork for foundations and drainage associated with the new toilet block, and inspecting constructional details of the structure containing the portaloos. There had been lavatories on the portaloos site since the mid 19th century, only the north wall and a stub of east wall of the purpose-built 19th century structure remained. The portaloos site intruded into a field boundary, the northern section of which, between the portaloos and the road, may have been original. The southern part, extending down to the cliff, had been moved to the east and rebuilt; enclosing part of the old field, now gardens, within the castle grounds. Nothing else of archaeological interest was observed. [Au(abr)] |
