Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed gravel extraction site identified that evidence relating to the use of the River Thames and its former channels from the Neolithic until the Late Saxon period had been recorded in the vicinity. Evidence for settlement on the gravel terraces along the Thames had also been recorded, which included a Neolithic henge, Iron Age hut circles and a site where Bronze Age, Iron Age and Roman settlement evidence had been excavated. Cartographic evidence indicated that the site had been common meadow land in the early 19th century, and that it had probably been so since the medieval period. It was concluded that the site had a moderate to high archaeological potential; a field evaluation was recommended. [AIP] |
