Abstract: |
A trench 1.8m x 1.4m was excavated at the site, which was located approximately 15m to the southwest of the fourteenth century Durham tower, part of a substantial and well-preserved section of the medieval city wall, known locally as the west walls. The walls and tower are afforded statutory protection as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, and although the area of works lay outside the Scheduled area, survival of features or deposits relating to the use of the two wall and ditch plots immediately adjacent to it was considered possible, though it was not know how deeply buried such features might be. Only a single deposit, a mixed dark-grey to yellowish-brown gravel, was recorded beneath the stone slab paving. This deposit probably represented a backfilling/levelling layer relating to the construction of the pavement. No deposits or features of any archaeological interest were observed and no finds were recovered from the trench. [Au(abr)] |
