Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that no artefacts or archaeological features had been recorded at the site. However, a peaty layer of potential archaeological interest several metres below the ground surface was identified during the excavation of boreholes. In the surrounding area, Palaeolithic flint tools and manufacturing debris had been found, and a Roman coin had been recovered. The site lay within an area of the shoreline with potential for the preservation of Bronze Age boats. Kingston upon Hull was founded in the early medieval period; the site itself would probably have been used for seasonal grazing of sheep or cattle at this time. Geotechnical test-pits at the site were monitored, but no archaeological remains were observed. It was concluded that no further archaeological investigation would be necessary; only a tiny proportion of the peaty layer identified within boreholes would be affected by construction works.
