Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development, which lay within a Conservation Area and an Area of High Archaeological Potential, was undertaken. The site lay within the presumed area of an early Roman fort, within the Roman town of Lindinis and the later medieval town. Buildings had lain on the site since at least the early 17th century, although part of it had remained open from the early 18th century until the construction of a cheese factory, after 1945. A number of archaeological discoveries had been made on the east side of Free Street and to the south of the site, which included Roman street alignments, buildings, mosaic pavements and other occupation evidence. It was concluded that the site had a high archaeological potential, and that further evaluation would be necessary. [Au(adp)] |
