Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential development. Twenty trenches were excavated totalling 876.34msq, providing an approximate 4.2% sample of the total area. The local geology consisted of London clay overlain by a head deposit of intermittent gravels and sandy clay. This head deposit was cut by three potential palaeochannels aligned north-west to south-east. The earliest archaeological features identified within the proposed development area, were late medieval in date. These consisted of a rough metalled surface fronting the line of Reculver Road, and a single north-west to south-east aligned field boundary ditch. No other features of archaeological significance were identified, although a series of post-medieval and modern agricultural pits, post holes, field drains, a dog burial and modern services were encountered. A small quantity of residual late prehistoric, Roman and medieval material was recovered. [Au(adp)] |
