Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at a proposed development site which lay immediately to the south of the King's Pool area within Stafford. Previous investigation of this area had produced palaeoenvironmental evidence dating back to the end of the last Ice Age. Archaeological potential within the proposal site itself related mainly to the medieval period. A dam had been built along the line of the present Lammascote Road to form the King's Pool. Remains of this may have lain within the northern boundary of the site. A mill had been established on a leat leading from the King's Pool to the River Sow, on the western edge of the site. In the south-eastern part of the site, a council waste depot had operated since the late 19th century. During the evaluation, no structural or artefactual evidence pre-dating the 19th century was found, other than a single sherd of medieval pottery and a sherd of late 17th century Staffordshire slipware. One of the four excavated trenches revealed the survival of a substantial late Victorian/Edwardian bottle dump, which had the potential to contribute to the social history of Stafford. Material recovered from two of the trenches showed good survival of environmental evidence dating back to at least the Iron Age. This evidence had the potential to provide information on the impact of human activity on the environment, particularly in relation to the development of Stafford town. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during development. [AIP]
