Abstract: |
A programme of archaeological evaluation was undertaken in response to a proposal to demolish existing extensions to the manor, to construct 18 new houses with garages and to convert Douces Manor into apartments. The evaluation involved the excavation of three trenches. The archaeological works revealed features of 19th/20th century date in all trenches. These features probably related to formal garden features associated with the manor house, prior to the construction of the existing modern extensions to the rear of the house. Two stratigraphically earlier features were present in trench 2, a possible hedge line and an undiagnostic feature, which possibly pre-dated the walled garden, but were also likely to have been of post-medieval date. The potential for the preservation of significant archaeological features or features pre-dating the post-medieval period was low. [Au(abr)] |
