Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundation trenches at a development site which lay within the medieval core of Little Carlton. Two medieval moated sites lay in the vicinity of the parish, and demolition of the 19th century parish church had revealed many medieval features, including doorways and chalk cladded soil walls. A later 10th century grave cover had been recovered from the rubble infill of the church wall. Investigation of a plot adjacent to the development site had revealed an undated ditch and a possible furrow. During the watching brief, two undated ditches which may have been land boundaries were revealed. One ditch may have been replaced by a limestone wall, as indicated by a rubble spread. Artefacts retrieved from unstratified layers and a subsoil included 14th-16th century pottery, modern tile, bone and fired clay, and were typical of a manuring scatter. [AIP] |
