Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to the proposed redevelopment of Dial Cottage to provide residential accommodation and exhibition space. Dial Cottage was a Grade II* Listed Building, renowned for being the home of the engineer George Stephenson, who built and tested the locomotive, Blucher, along the neighbouring waggonway in 1814. A sundial above the door, which gave the cottage its name, was made by George and Robert Stephenson in 1816. No documentary or cartographic evidence was located for the existence of this or any other building on the site before 1800, and accordingly it was suggested that construction of the row of houses of which Dial Cottage formed part was linked to the establishment of the Killingworth colliery in 1802. The results of the survey suggested that the core of the original fabric survived and that some of the subsequent modifications may have been attributable to the period in which George Stephenson was resident. In the light of proposals for renovation, an assessment of the impact of these proposals was carried out and recommendations made for further recording to be undertaken during building works.
