Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken as part of a school's redevelopment scheme. Nine out of a total of 12 proposed evaluation trenches were cut across the area of development; standing buildings and other constraints (including the presence of slow worms) precluded a full investigation. A number of the trenches revealed sequences of probable river terrace gravels which were subsequently investigated in deep sondages. These deposits may possibly have been significant in terms of Quaternary geoarchaeology, but were generally at great depth and did not yield any evidence for palaeoliths or environmental material. The deposits were unlikely to have been seriously affected by the development. The gravels were sealed by thick deposits of head, which formed the underlying natural subsoil. No significant archaeological features were revealed in any of the trenches except for trench one, where two possible prehistoric ditches were recorded and in trench 13 where another similarly dated ditch was located.
