Abstract:
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a supermarket identified that a Neolithic axe had been found in the parish of Ashbourne, and that two Bronze Age barrows had been recorded in the area. The first documentary reference to the town of Ashbourne was made in the Domesday Survey of 1086. Much of the medieval street plan had been preserved, and it was noted that one particular back lane which had followed the ends of medieval crofts was evident in the area of the site; this could be impacted by the pedestrian access from the main street into the proposed development. Ashbourne had been the scene of two minor skirmishes during the Civil War. It was concluded that the proposal site incorporated two areas which could retain preserved medieval and post-medieval deposits. It was noted that, although the remains of a Bronze Age barrow had been recorded at an uncertain location, possibly within the development site, it was likely that any remains would have been destroyed by the large-scale development of the area in the 19th century.
