Abstract: |
Two evaluation trenches were excavated to examine the cause of subsidence, and to allow a scheme of consolidation to be drawn up to arrest the subsidence while causing minimum damage to the archaeological deposits. The cause of the subsidence was confirmed as being the medieval moat. The evaluation demonstrated that archaeological deposits of some interest, and relating to the final centuries of the medieval castle and its demolition lay close beneath the present ground surface.
