Abstract: |
The evaluation was undertaken as a requirement of SAM Consent for the construction of a paved path to link the existing paving outside of the SW exit door of the cathedral to the foot of the access ramp leading up to the Cathedral Visitor's Centre. A single 1.65m by 1.65m trial trench was excavated. As expected, the results of the evaluation revealed that the core of the west wall of the Norman front of the cathedral survived immediately below the existing hogging. Within the excavated area the wall survived undisturbed, although its interior face had been removed at some point in the past, presumably during the remodelling of the west front during the second half of the 14th century. To the east of the wall, recent levels were not breached at the depth excavated. Therefore, within the area excavated, significant archaeological levels lay below the required foundation depth of the proposed new paving. [Au(adp)] |
