Abstract: |
Three trial trenches were excavated on the site which lay within the projected alignment of a Neolithic palisaded enclosure. Two of the trenches were excavated on the alignment of the proposed development, and a third across the site of the proposed garage and on the projected alignment of the enclosure. The two trenches excavated on the proposed development alignment revealed nothing of archaeological interest. However, the other trench revealed a number of features which included a rammed chalk and flint surface, a stone pathway/courtyard, and a probable ditch with features similar to those discovered on previous excavations of the monument. These features included the remains of post holes, sarsen packing stones and back filling material. It was highly probable that the sitch feature was part of the Neolithic enclosure. [Au(abr)] |
