Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that no archaeological remains had previously been recorded at the site. Early prehistoric artefacts had been recovered in the surrounding area, and a Roman coffin had been found nearby. The route of a Roman road passed through woodland to the north, and a possible Roman settlement site lay to the north east. Medieval settlement remains were abundant in the area, and included Otterbourne Moated Manor, a Scheduled Ancient Monument (no. 12055). A walkover survey of the site itself was conducted and several features were observed, including earthwork terraces, a bank and ditch and a trackway of probable medieval origin. It was concluded that further archaeological work would probably be necessary. [AIP] |
