The abstract describing the content of the publication or report
Abstract:		 A desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a flood embankment identified that Bronze Age barrows lay in the surrounding area, and that assemblages of flint and late prehistoric pottery had been found. At nearby Hengistbury Head, evidence of settlement dating from all periods between the Palaeolithic and Roman times had been recorded. Within Christchurch, residual Roman building material had been identified. A Saxon cemetery had been excavated, and a medieval castle lay within the town. Bridge Street Island was known to have been settled in the 14th century and in the late 18th century, and possibly in the intervening period. It was concluded that there was a possibility of encountering prehistoric material at the site, and that any artefacts encountered were likely to be waterlogged. [AIP]
