Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a golf course identified that an Iron Age pit containing pottery, animal bones and a saddle quern had been excavated there in 1940, and that a 19th century lime kiln lay adjacent to the site. Further Iron Age remains had been found in the surrounding area, including two chalk shafts and an Iron Age/Romano-British farmstead. Mesolithic and Neolithic struck flakes, burials of Bronze Age, Roman and Saxon date and an 18th century icehouse had also been recorded. The route of a Roman road passed nearby. It was concluded that the site had a high archaeological potential, and that trial trenches should be excavated in areas where deep disturbance was to occur, and in the area of the Iron Age pit.
