Abstract:
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of pits for steel reinforcements, undertaken as part of renovation works within a building which was comprised mainly of late Victorian fabric, although parts of the present basement may have been re-used from an earlier building. St. Stephen's Street lay outside the archaeologically defined extent of late Saxon Norwich, but was within the medieval walled city. 18th and 19th century pottery had been recovered during construction of buildings on the rear part of the plot at no. 32, in 1972. Pottery of similar date had been recovered during works in the cellar of no. 30. During the watching brief, a poorly-constructed post-medieval wall consisting of re-used medieval bricks and some flint was recorded, and an uneven floor surface was encountered beneath the modern floor. Both features could be related to an earlier phase of use of the present building, or could have been part of an earlier building which had used some of the same basement structures. A large cut feature was also observed, and a pit containing 17th century pottery and other domestic debris was recorded. [AIP]
