Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of a site proposed for the drilling of exploratory wells identified that a Neolithic axe had been found to the south, and that medieval sites recorded in the surrounding area included a moated manor house, a moated homestead and St. Peter's Cross, a boundary marker built in c. 1437. The remains of Lingfield College, founded in 1431, and the collegiate church, rebuilt in the same year, also lay to the south. Cartographic evidence indicated that the proposal site had remained as open agricultural land since the mid-18th century. It was noted that the site's position within a floodplain lessened the likelihood of settlement evidence of any period having existed there. However, buried channels of the Ray Brook, containing evidence relating to the ancient environment, could potentially be present. It was recommended that a watching brief should be maintained during the cutting of drainage trenches. [AIP] |
