Abstract: |
The area of the proposed retail store had been extensively terraced prior to the commencement of the watching brief. Some of the terracing was for the new construction work, but much probably related to a former football ground. As a result, any archaeological remains in the area, if they ever existed, would have been destroyed or badly damaged. The virtual absence of finds suggested that little of archaeological importance had been lost. The northern half of the development was more likely to contain archaeological remains as it was protected by a layer of made ground. The small area exposed was too small to ascertain the presence of archaeological remains, however, the lack of artefacts suggested an absence of intensive archaeological activity. [Au] |
