Abstract:
An area of land at Coppers, Rottingdean, on the east side of the Green, had been identified as a potential location for the construction of a single dwelling. An examination of the SMR and other records revealed that a number of historic buildings, archaeological sites and findspots were located within a one kilometre radius of the proposed development and, most significantly, that the proposal area was located within the site of a former Quaker burial ground. A total of 102 individuals were known to have been interred here from 1659 to\r\n1889, and there was a high potential that the graves and their associated human remains would survive in-situ. As the precise location of the majority of graves, and the condition of any associated human remains was not yet known, the impact of development proposals upon these remains and the scope for potential mitigation could not be fully assessed. It was recommended that further archaeological investigation in the form of trial-trenching should be undertaken to ascertain the presence or absence of archaeological features within the site, and the depth, nature and condition of any surviving remains.
