Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the construction of a replacement water main, which bisected a number of field boundaries. Possible prehistoric occupation had been recorded within several caves in the surrounding area, and a possible prehistoric monument lay in the vicinity. Undated earthworks which may have been related to the ruins of a manor house lay to the west of the pipeline. During the watching brief, eleven prehistoric flint flakes, a chert implement and a disc scraper of Bronze Age form were recovered. Two abraded sherds of medieval pottery were also found. The ages of the field boundaries crossed by the pipeline could not accurately be ascertained, although it seemed probable that all except one were products of post-medieval enclosure. [AIP] |
