Abstract:
Three areas of archaeological activity were identified during the further period of investigation. The first, a seemingly isolated group of post holes and associated stakeholes was revealed. Unfortunately no cultural material was retrieved from the area and no structure could be determined from the post holes. Secondly, a number of features highlighted a more intense area of activity. Four phases of archaeological activity were indicated by features within the trench. The earliest phase was represented by a substantial ditch. The second phase was represented by a re-cutting of the ditch. Partially overlying the recut was the remains of a layer which contained significant quantities of cultural material. The final phase of activity was indicated by the location of two post holes cutting the recut and a gully cutting the layer sealing the recut. All the phases represented were dated to the Early Neolithic. The third area of activity was indicated by the presence of a number of gullies/ditches, post holes, small pits and a probable sunken way. These were all dated to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age transitional period with the exception of a ditch which dated to the Early Bronze Age. [Au]
