Abstract:
Winlaton Village had a recorded history that dated back to the late-12th century, but may also have had a pre-conquest origin. Although the development of the village was not fully understood, it had an important place in the industrial history of the region. Coal was mined here as early as 1367, and it was the centre of Sir Ambrose Crowley's ironworking industry from 1690 to 1816. Even after the departure of Crowley's business, coal and iron played the major part in the economy of the village. The site of the proposed development was adjacent to Front Street and Church Street, which were at the centre of the medieval village. As such, it was possible that remains of medieval street frontages could be encountered during groundwork. There was the possibility that evidence for 14th century mining, which was very poorly understood and of potentially great importance could be encountered away from the street frontage. In addition, there were 19th century industrial buildings in the area which could be indirectly affected by the proposed development. This development could affect archaeological evidence for the poorly understood medieval village of Winlaton. As such, further evaluation work would be necessary to determine the extent of survival and informative potential of this evidence. [Au]
