Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken involving extensive trenching, however, no significant archaeological features were found. A possible bomb crater and modern well were located. The almost total lack of artefacts across the site confirmed there was a general absence of archaeological activity on this area. Only a modest group of flint flakes and fire-cracked flints in trench one were of interest. This could have suggested a casual use of this area in prehistoric times, or the presence of a related settlement site beyond the boundaries of this development. The WWII air-raid shelters on the east side of the site were deeply and largely outside the development. The two entrances were just within the site boundaries and fell in the rear gardens of the houses designated here. In view of this extensive examination of the site, no further archaeological excavation was needed, but a modest watching brief at the far north end of the site may have been appropriate. [Au(adp)] |
