Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed site of a golf course identified that an area to the east of the site contained a small number of historical sites dating from the 13th century and later. These included a moat, a former gatehouse and a mill site. A Neolithic flint scraper had also been found in the area. The site itself was used as common land in the middle ages. Between 1510 and the 1550s, it was enclosed as a deer park; thereafter, it was used for agricultural purposes. It was recommended that areas of the site proposed for deep construction works, such as the building of a clubhouse, should be evaluated by trial trenching, and that a watching brief should be carried out during ground disturbance in areas of shallower construction work.
