Abstract:
An excavation was carried out within a field where fieldwalking and subsequent geophysical survey had revealed the probable site of a medieval house. It was thought possible that this represented the chapel and the manor house of c. 1300 of Adam de la Ford. During the excavation, the remains of a chapel were recorded. These included a plinth of lias rubble and chippings, walls, part of an exterior doorway, a floor, heaps of roofing slate, green glazed ceramic ridge tiles and an abundance of crumbled plaster. Elsewhere within the site, further walls, masonry and a floor were revealed. A considerable scatter of abraded 13th century pottery was found at the chapel's foundation levels, consistent with its location within the court of a manor house. It was well-documented that a chantry chapel had been built within the court at Ford manor in c. 1305, and that this had survived until it was dissolved as a free chapel in 1548. Because the location of a small building within the court was clearly visible on the geophysical plot, and the excavated remains had been so well-preserved in comparison with the surrounding buildings, it was thought reasonable to conclude that the site could be positively identified as that of Adam de la Ford's manor house and chantry chapel.
