Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken after the discovery of early foundations by workmen during the construction of a new drainage system within the churchyard. The watching brief showed that substantial lengths of the walls and foundations of an earlier aisle attached to the present church survived. The architectural history of the church was re-assessed which showed that the church grew from an 11th/12th century nave with a narrow chancel, to a fully aisled church in the 13th century. It was subsequently extended eastwards in the early 14th century. Later the church contracted, probably as a result of the shift of the village away from the church and general population decline.
