Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment and surface inspection was undertaken at Rixton New Hall, Warrington. The SMR did not refer to any sites or findspots within the specific area of the development proposal. However, the project brief defined the study area as a minimum area of 2km radius around the centre of the application site, and in this area there did appear to be potential for archaeology. Examination of aerial photographs identified a group of four possible enclosures, a possible barrow, and associated linear features, at the south-west of the application area; a possible prehistoric date was suggested. Medieval and post-medieval boundaries were also recognised. A phased programme of work was recommended consisting of fieldwalking, geophysical survey, trial trenching and a watching brief.
