Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during construction works for a new supermarket at a former colliery site. A flint scatter of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date had been found to the east of the site, and a dismantled railway line passed immediately to the south. Earlier evaluation at the site itself had revealed evidence of substantial structures, including at least one building associated with the colliery complex. During the watching brief, further structures and features relating to the colliery were recorded, including substantial and well-preserved 19th and 20th century walls, some of which were associated with evidence of internal floor surfaces. Retaining walls of the elevated 20th century tub lines and the revetment walls for a rail cutting were observed. [AIP] |
