Abstract:
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in advance of the proposed redevelopment of the site. The site was currently used as a car park, all buildings relating to Riding Hall Mill having been demolished. The proposed development would raise the present ground level across the site by up to 2m. A retail unit, covering 45,000 square feet, was proposed for the eastern side of the Hebble Brook culvert. No development was proposed on the area west of Hebble Brook, which was to be used as car parking for the retail. unit. Riding Hall Mill comprised a series of buildings dating from 1880 to the 1950s built over the River Hebble, which were demolished in the 1990s. The site lay approximately 50m east of the Parish Church of St. John the Baptist and 40m east of the Listed Coal Drops on Berry Lane. Cartographic evidence from the mid 18th to mid 19th centuries had shown roads, domestic and industrial structures within the Proposed Development Area, predating Riding Hall Mill. The earliest buildings were on the west side of Hebble Brook along Kirkgate, Berry Lane and Clark Bridge frontage, and were possibly part of the medieval town of Halifax. A series of mill and industrial buildings were located on the eastern side of the Hebble from the early 19th century. [Au(abr)]
