Abstract: |
A watching brief during groundworks for the construction of two dwellings on a site adjacent to Hall Garth, the medieval moated residence of the Archbishops of York (a Scheduled Ancient Monument) identified a depression infilled by an organic/peaty deposit which contained a piece of timber which appeared to have come from a quartered tree trunk which had been sawn at both ends. A layer of chalk rubble, which also contained fragments of medieval tile, animal bone and oyster shell, sealed this deposit. One fragment of pottery was recovered from the chalk rubble layer which may have been manufactured in Toyton All Saints, Lincolnshire, during the late 13th or early 14th centuries. [AIP] |
